The song “Redesgin Me” by VersaEmerge is one of my favorites on their album Fixed at Zero. For a song to really mean something to me it has to have lyrics that I can relate to or it has to have something lyrically and musically that captures me. This song does all of that. Take a look at the lyrics here:

If you were still around,
You’d tell me I’m different, since the last time you called me out
I’d put you down, I’d tell you it’s a waste of time to keep you by my side.
If you were still around, I swear, we would sit and stare, we would be nowhere…

And to this day I look for what it’s going to take, to just let things be…
Still I wonder is it you or me who should feel guilty…
I’m pulling, I’m pushing, I’m putting it out of my mind.
…thought that I had said goodbye

If you were still around,
You’d tell me that you’re sorry, but you don’t know what you’re sorry about
I’d keep to myself, keep you guessing, make you question
If it’s ever going to work itself out.
If you were still around, I swear, we would sit and stare, we would be nowhere…

And to this day I look for what it’s going to take, to just let things be…
Still today I wonder is it you or me who should feel guilty…
I’m pulling, I’m pushing, I’m putting it out of my mind.
…thought that I had said goodbye

Yeah, it still haunts me… (x3)

And to this day I look for what it’s going to take, to just let things be…
And to this day I wonder is it you or me who should feel guilty…
I’m pulling, I’m pushing, I’m putting it out of my mind.
…thought that I had said goodbye

This song is obviously about some type of relationship. It can be interpreted as a romantic relationship or a friendship. Knowing a lot about this band I have come to discover that they don’t write songs about romantic relationships, something that not very many musicians do. So I am going to focus on the meaning that Sierra was trying to portray when writing this song. According to lead singer Sierra:

“I wrote about the friends I was growing apart from and a person I chose to leave behind. Life is too short to sit around. I feel a constant need to get out into the world. Moving on is hard, but it’s sometimes for the better.”

We all go through points in our lives where people change and friendships change. Especially as we grow older we realize who our true friends are. Usually as we grow in age our number of friends (and I mean friends who we can trust with our lives) gets smaller. Every friendship goes through its ups and downs and sometimes they just end. Even the friendships that you thought would last forever. It’s not that the person who you thought was your friend wasn’t in fact your friend. As you get older you change; sometimes for the better and sometimes not. Sometimes we change into people who are better off without each other.

To me this song says instead of trying to hold onto the past, move ahead into the future. Sierra was obviously talking about a really good friendship that she chose to leave behind. She believed it was for the best because life is too short. I couldn’t agree more. My favorite part of the song:

If you were still around,
You’d tell me that you’re sorry, but you don’t know what you’re sorry about
I’d keep to myself, keep you guessing, make you question
If it’s ever going to work itself out.
If you were still around, I swear, we would sit and stare, we would be nowhere…

To me this says that at this point in time if they were to sit there with each other they wouldn’t even know what to say. It’s just an endless cycle of “I’m sorrys” and no mutual understandings. So much has happened that if they sat in front of each other they would just “sit and stare”. Down the road who knows what will happen? But for now she chose to move on. What I’ve realized is exactly what Sierra said. Life is too short to sit around and moving on is hard, but it’s for the better. Sometimes in life it is ok to be completely selfish and do something for the betterment of yourself.

Okay so the song “Assassin” by John Mayer may not be “the soundtrack to my life” at this point and time, but I love this song too much to let a good blog post pass me by. The perfect word to describe this song would be “Karma”. Now, if he titled this song “Karma” it would be too obvious. John Mayer has a way with words, which makes his reputation as “playboy” of the entertainment world not surprising one bit; but it does make for some great music. Checkout the lyrics to “Assassin” below before I continue on:

I work in the dead of night
When the roads are quiet
No one is around
To track my moves

Race in the end of lights
To find the gate is open
She’s waiting in the room
I just slip on through

You get in
You get done
And then you get gone
You never leave a trace or show your face
You get gone

Should have turned around
And left before the sun came up again
But the sun came up again

Enter the morning light
To find the day is burning the curtains and the wine
In a little white room
No, I’m not alone
Her head is heavy on me
She’s sleeping like a child
What could I do?

You get in
You get done
And then you get gone
You never leave a trace or show your face
You get gone

Should have turned around
And left before the sun came up again
But the sun came up again

I was a killer, was the best they’d ever seen
I’d steal your heart before you ever heard a thing
I’m an assassin and I had a job to do
Little did I know that girl was an assassin too

Suddenly I’m in over my head and I could hardly breathe
Suddenly I’m floating over her bed and I feel everything
Suddenly I know exactly what I did, but I cannot move a thing
Suddenly I know exactly what I’d done and what it’s gonna mean to me, mean to me
I’m gone

I was a killer, was the best they’d ever seen
I’d steal your heart before you ever heard a thing
I’m an assassin and I had a job to do
Little did I know that girl was an assassin too

She’s an assassin
She’s an assassin
She’s an assassin
She’s an assassin and she had a job to do

Alright, so this song is relatable to everyone at some point in their lives in some way (maybe the title of this post should be “The Soundtrack To OUR Lives”). Whether you were the “assassin” or you were the target, I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say we all played both of these roles at some point.

The song is about a guy who is a “player” (achemmm…John Mayer), who is being referred to as an “assassin”. Why? “You get in/You get done/And then you get gone/You never leave a trace or show your face/You get gone”. Assassins need to disconnect themselves from any emotional connection they have with their “target”, do their job, and get out, just as this assassin has always done with girls (or in the case that the girl is the player vice versa). The one time that this guy doesn’t stick to his usual routine he wakes up in the morning to this girl’s “Head heavy on him/Sleeping like a child” and as a consequence of breaking his own rules he’s fallen in love.

Best part of this song? The irony. For someone who has probably broken a few hearts by sticking to these rules, karma has come back to bite him in the ass! Now I interpret this part of the song in two different ways. First, he realized that he has fallen in, and maybe subconsciously that is why he stayed the night and in the end this girl was just playing the same game that he always played. Now since I think girls are more spiteful than guys when it comes to situations like this, I can see a crowd of girls at the end of this song giving high-fives and screaming “wooo girl power!” The truth of the matter is, ladies if you’re having a one night stand what do you expect??? A relationship??? While in some cases maybe, chances are a big NO!

The second interpretation of this, would be plain and simple. He broke his rules, he fell in love, but he got out of there anyway. The girl wasn’t intentionally the “assassin”. She didn’t mean to steal his heart. Something about her made him stay the night and in the morning he realized by him simply staying the night he was the “assassinated” one.

Whichever interpretation you believe, isn’t the issue. Everyone interprets songs differently. If there are any guys reading this, in no way am I making you out to be the player in every situation…of course this can go both ways and it does. We’ve all played both roles. The lyrics to this song isn’t the only thing that makes it so great. Not only is it lyrically genius, but the percussion, guitar, and echoing in the background make this song musically genius as well. Not to mention his guitar solos that always kill (if you ever see him live you’ll know what I mean…his CDs don’t do him justice). This is one of my favorite John Mayer songs…next tour do it!

And is anyone as curious as I am to find out who stole John Mayer’s heart???
