Grace Potter Takes On Beyonce

Posted on: April 25, 2011

What do you get when a bluesy soulful rocker takes on the queen of R&B? You’ll have to take a listen below to find out, but I’m telling you its great!
Grace Potter & The Nocturnals was the subject of today’s “Monday Mashup” on Billboard.com and they decided to do a cover of Beyonce’s “Why Don’t You Love Me”. I’m not the biggest Beyonce fan, but I’m a huge Grace Potter fan and I love what they did with this song. The original version of this song contains energetic beats, a drum loop, funky guitars, and a bass line that gives the song a little soul, but makes it a great dance song.
Grace’s version sticks pretty closely to the original, but definitely adds a lot more rock and soul to the song. Her voice alone adds so much to the song, with its soulful resonance and bluesy feeling. That combined with hand claps and a continuous back beat from the drums makes this song their own.
Potter admits in the video below that she wasn’t really all that familiar with Beyonce, but the more and more she learned about her she became extremely impressed with her music and career.

“[Beyonce] has such a mastery over her career and music. She’s just an inspiration. Potter goes on to say how impressed she is that “the idea that there could be a woman out there that could be so empowered and that has such great presence and has all that sexuality but can back it up with the talent and charisma that she has.”

The way that Potter views Beyonce is how I always viewed Potter. Sure, she hasn’t had the success that Beyonce has had, but Potter has an amazing presence coupled with that sexuality that she sees in Beyonce. And of course she can back all of that up with her talent and charisma. Just go and catch Grace Potter & The Nocturnals live and you will see exactly what I am talking about.
Now it all depends on your musical taste, but I would choose Grace’s version of “Why Don’t You Love Me” over Beyonce’s any day. Beyonce, watch out…you might have some competition here!
