The Weeknd: New Artist To Watch!

Posted on: April 6, 2011

In the past week new artist The Weeknd have started to gain much attention when Drake tweeted the lyrics to their song “Wicked Games”. In fact, if you take a listen to The Weeknd’s just-released mixtape House of Balloons, it is slightly reminiscent of Drake’s mixtapes. There were even rumors (which there is no truth to) that producer Noah “40” Shebib, who works closely with Drake, worked on the House of Balloons mixtape.

So what’s all this hype about? The Weeknd consists of Toronto-born Abel Tesfaye (vocals) and Jeremy Rose (production). Not much is known about Tesfaye, leaving much as a mystery, which almost reflects the sound of his music. The mixtape is a combination of R&B, indie, and electronic music, with mysterious sounds and crisp beats. It explores the subject of women and love in a very in-depth, raw, and honest way. There is a lot of profanity, but this only magnifies the realness of the subject- hey, love isn’t all rainbows and butterflies.

It’s so hard to pick a favorite track. The title track “High For This” has a muffled beat and smooth vocals. The beat keeps building as the song progresses, adding more drama and depth. “House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls” is dark, but smooth. This song samples Siouxsie & The Banshees’ “Happy House”. It has such a dark, mysterious beat, that there is no way you can’t be drawn in. Half way through the song the beat changes up, adding even more of a mysterious, eerie sound. One of my personal favorites is “Wicked Games”, with its amazing vocals, haunting sound, and exrteme passion.

What I love most about this mixtape is its honesty and passion. Tesfaye stays true to who he really is and pushes the R&B genre in a different, but great direction, that we don’t see in contemporary R&B music. I see great things happening for the Weeknd. I just hope when they do explode onto the scene they stick to their roots.
