Grace Potter & The Nocturnals Rock NYC!

Posted on: April 6, 2011

Last night definitely felt like ‘a hot summer night in the middle of the winter’ at New York City’s Irving Plaza, where Grace Potter & The Nocturnals played an awesome show! According to the band’s bio on their website www.gracepotter.com , “Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are like a modern-day version of Tina Turner stroking the microphone in a spangled mini-dress while fronting the Rolling Stones circa Sticky Fingers”. I couldn’t agree more. It’s hard to place them in one specific musical genre. Their music combines blues, soul, and rock.

The opening act for the night, was The Belle Brigade, a band from Los Angeles made up of siblings Barbara and Ethan Gruska. Seeing this band walk out on stage all in plaid button down shirts (with the exception of Barbara Gruska) I had no idea what I was in for, but two songs into their set they won the audience over, with their amazing harmonies and enthusiasm (not to mention their awesome drummer, who got a lot of love from the audience during his extremely energetic tambourine performance). Their single “Losers” was one of my favorites. All of their songs have beautiful harmonies (yes, I said that already, but I’m a sucker for a good harmony). Their debut album comes out April 19th and I definitely encourage you to check them out!

Onto the main show, Grace Potter opened with her song ‘Only Love’. She came out on stage in a super cute, short sequin dress, and high heels. The whole night was just one big party! Not only does Grace have an amazing voice, but the feeling she puts into her shows is unbelievable. Everything she feels, the audience can feel as well. A few songs into her set, she tried getting the barricade that kept the audience two feet away from the stage, moved. “You guys are too far away from me! Can we get these barricades moved?” Little did she know, the barricades were actually bolted to the ground, so instead she just got on top of the barricades! It’s hard for me to pick my favorite part of the night, but some of my favorites were ‘Low Road’, ‘Hot Summer Night’, and of course her single ‘Paris (Ooh La La).

You don’t see many artists like Grace Potter around today. The first time I heard her music I loved it! Then when I actually saw what she looked like, it was a surprise to me. The first thought that came to my mind was she looks like Britney Spears, but she sure can rock! Sure, every other week theres some new blond woman in the music industry who comes out on stage in a short sequin dress, high heels, and sparkly jewelry. However, how often do you see that, combined with bluesy soul rock music, uncoreographed dance moves, along with playing her own instruments (piano, guitar, and tambourine only to name a few)? It’s not something you see much, which is why I love Grace Potter & The Nocturnals!
